Week 2
Cadence Weapon - Afterparty Babies
I cannot stop listening to this album, the hooks have become firmly lodged in my head and I cannot escape them. He opened for Final Fantasy last year, and having never heard of him I had no idea what to expect but was very impressed. He seems very unassuming which is refreshing and I really appreciate his more down-to-Earth ego. The lyrics are smart and funny and I feel like I can relate in ways that I could not even fathom listening to Kanye West.
The New Pornographers - Challengers
This is a band I have been meaning to listen to forever now. Right away I knew I would like them, as soon as “My Rights Versus Yours” started, though I was really hooked for good when the title track, “Challengers”, played. I am not crazy about all of the songs though taken as a whole I really like this album. Plus if this is one of their weaker albums, as some of the reviews seem to indicate, things can only get better.
M.I.A. - Kala
I am not quite sure what to think about this album. At times I feel as though M.I.A. is trying to be hipster ironic with the lyrical send-ups to Jonathan Richman and The Pixies, and at other times I feel as though she is looking down on Americans for being fat, rich and arrogant. And I mean, we are fat, rich and arrogant so I can take that, but only if she really means it. I think she does but I cannot be sure.
